Oak is a durable wood with a medium to course texture. The wood is extremely resistant to preservative treatment and the logs are thus liable to severe insect attack.
Oak varies in colour from pale yellow-brown to biscuit with a pinkish tint. It is straight-grained, with the characteristic silver grain.
The timber takes nails and screws well, although pre-drilling is advised. It also stains and polishes to a good finish.
Oak is mainly used for flooring, furniture making, joinery, heavy construction and boat-building.
